Teachers Union Wants Return To Remote Learning During Surge

The National Education Association Rhode Island is calling for a switch to remote learning.

The union says the ongoing surge in coronavirus cases has left many schools statewide understaffed.

However, in a statement, the state Department of Education says in-person learning is the best option for providing academic and social support.

The teacher's union, in its own statement says these are different times and keeping kids and staff safe is the goal while keeping the learning process going is important.“Because public schools are an integral component woven into the fabric of our cities and towns, the NEARI executive committee insists that students, education professionals, and staff must be tested for COVID-19 to further safeguard our communities and curb the spread of this rampant disease.

Governor McKee has not commented on the latest union statement.
