UMass Amherst Chancellor To Retire Next Year

UMass Amherst Chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy announced today he will retire at the end of June, 2023. He arrived in Amherst in 2012. And his tenured has been called extraordinary.

In his statement, the chancellor says:

“I will forever treasure the support and friendship of the campus community. By channeling our revolutionary spirit, we have become one of the fastest rising top-tier public research universities in the country and I am confident that, in its next chapter, the University of Massachusetts Amherst will soar even higher.”

The chancellor is being credited with among other things forging a campus relationship with downtown Springfield which has grown each year.

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno states, “Bittersweet, Chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy has always been a gentleman and did a fine job up in Amherst. I deeply appreciated our partnership. He’s been a good friend to me and continuing our UMass Springfield campus right here in downtown. 

A national search for a successor will commence.
