Councilor Upset With Latest Fire Department Hire

A Springfield City Council member is taking issue with the latest hire to the city's fire department.

Luke Cournoyer is a former detective who was granted immunity during a federal trial last December against his colleague Gregg Bigda.

Back in 2016, Bigda was accused of using excessive force and conducting an abusive interrogation after a group of juveniles allegedly stole a police vehicle.

He was acquitted at the trial.

The Springfield city solicitor says Cournoyer met all criteria and there was no reason not to hire him.

However, city councilor Justin Hurst argues that allowing Cournoyer to serve is disrespectful to other members of the fire department who hold themselves to a higher standard.
