Chicopee To Crackdown On Drivers, Pedestrians To Keep Streets Safe

The City of Chicopee is taking action in an effort to make city streets in the aftermath of a series of fatal traffic accidents that have claimed six lives in the last two months--three lives in the last two weeks.

Police Chief Patrick Major says he is devoting additional overtime and patrols in hot spot areas to strictly enforce moving violations for drivers and pedestrians alike.

The Chief says that not only are drivers going to fast, some impaired while others are distracted but pedestrians are as well.

So far this year the department has issued more than six thousand tickets to drivers.

Officials say it is not just a Massachusetts problem it is one that is developing across the country.

Meantime, the chief says all the accidents remain under investigation.
