Baker Walks Away From Pardon Petition

Governor Charlie Baker has withdrawn his pardon request for a man and his sister convicted of sexually abusing children at the Fells Acres Day School in Malden in the 1980s.

Victims of Gerald Amirault and his sister Cheryl Amirault LeFave were strongly opposed to the pardon request.

Baker withdrew the request yesterday, right before the Governor's Council was scheduled to vote on the matter.

LT Governor Karyn Polito, who chairs the Council meetings says it was obvious to her and the Governor that they did not have the votes to approve, so the petition was being withdrawn.

Gerald Amirault spent 18 years in prison before being granted parole in 2004, while his sister served eight years in prison.
