Light Week For Lawmakers, Governor As New Year Approaches

Starting today, Governor Baker can basically kill any bill on his desk with no risk of his veto being overridden by the legislature.

The so-called “pocket veto” comes about with less than ten days in a session.

A governor can veto any bill without any threat of the legislature overriding his veto.

It is unclear what formal votes lawmakers will take.

Historically only local-local issues come begore the body.

Lawmakers will meet officially twice this week.

Meantime, we are waiting on state lawmakers to decide some key local issues in the state.

One for East Longmeadow will allow the town to exempt police officers from civil service.

Another in Concord calls for “ranked choice voting” in municipal elections.

Another bill would call on the State Health Department to rank hospitals based on its ability to treat certain cases of stroke.
