Senator Ed Markey spoke in Chicopee on Monday, to discuss concerns over potential lead exposure from aging cable phone lines.
Soil tests are underway for lead in the city, and some areas have turned up dangerous levels.
Markey is heading a probe into the aging, lead-sheathed cables, following a report by the Wall Street Journal last year.
While fiber-optic cables are now the rule, the old cables are believed to pose a health risk nationwide.
