The Superintendent of the Springfield Police Department will be able to stay in the position past the standard retirement age.

The Massachusetts Legislature has passed a home rule petition allowing Superintendent Lawrence Akers to continue his role until the age of 70.

The standard retirement age is 65 years old.

Springfield lawmakers say the petition was made in recognition of Akers' almost 40 years of service to S-P-D.
