Two Americans are this year's recipients of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, including a professor at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun were announced as the winners yesterday for the discovery of microRNA.

Ambros is a professor of natural science at the Medical School, while Gary Ruvkun, is a professor of genetics at Harvard.

They were honored for their work published back in 1993 on MicroRNA, which is a class of molecules that help determine how organisms function and their discovery opens up possibilities for fighting diseases.
