Drought Conditions Worsening In Western Mass

State officials say drought conditions are worsening in Western Massachusetts. According to the Department of Energy and Environmental Affairs, the Western Region is in a Level Two Significant Drought, and the drought in the Connecticut River Valley Region is Level Three Critical.

“The recent rain and snowfall are a welcome reprieve from the drought we have been experiencing,” said EEA Secretary Rebecca Tepper. “However, it has not been enough to replenish our groundwater. As the growing season approaches, it is vital that everyone continues to follow state guidance and local water restrictions to ensure water is available for our essential needs.”

The department said the levels are being raised after below-average rain and snowfall in the past month.

The state is urging residents and business to conserve water when possible as the growing season approaches.
