Uxbridge Police Officer Killed While Assisting Driver On Icy Highway

Law enforcement officials say an Uxbridge police officer was killed in a crash while helping a driver on an icy stretch of Route 146 early Wednesday.

Police identified the officer as Stephen LaPorta, a 43-year-old who was struck by a tractor-trailer while assisting a motorist.

LaPorta was pronounced dead at the scene despite life-saving efforts, and the truck driver was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

Massachusetts State Police are leading the investigation as flags across the state are ordered lowered in his honor.
