Former Massachusetts congressman Barney Frank is dead at the age of 86.

His sister confirmed he died in hospice care in Maine on Wednesday.

The Democrat was one of the first openly gay members of Congress and represented southern Massachusetts for 32 years.

He retired from Congress in 2012.

In 1989, Frank admitted to paying an male escort for sex but fired him after he learned that a man who was working for him as an aide, was using his Washington, DC apartment to run a prostitution service.
