Providence Schools Could Return Soon To Local Control

Rhode Island Education Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green will recommend that the state return Providence schools to local control by July 1st.

The commissioner is expected to make the recommendation to the Rhode Island Council on Elementary and Secondary Education May 26th.

Infante-Green says her decision was made after deep deliberation and consultation with state and city leaders.

The state took control of Providence schools in November of 2019 after a Johns Hopkins University report documented systemic failures.
