A public hearing is set for today in Springfield on proposed new safety rules for railroad crossings across Massachusetts.
The Department of Public Utilities wants clearer standards for evaluating crossings and making improvements, including better lighting, signs, gates, and pavement markings.
The proposal comes as passenger rail service expands across the state, including South Coast Rail, which opened last year.
