Work Continues On Massive Water Main Break

The Springfield Water and Sewer Commission is informing residents that there was an unintended release of untreated wastewater into the Chicopee and Connecticut rivers.

The separate incidents happened Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

The Chicopee River release was reportedly caused by a storm-related utility outage and backup power failure at the Indian Orchard Pump Station, while the Connecticut River release at the York Street Pump Station was caused by a large water main break in Springfield.

Multiple agencies have been notified and investigation is expected.

Meantime, on East Columbus and Mill where a 36 inch water main break caused all kinds of havoc---crews continue to pump out water from the massive hole.

If all goes well then the repaving of the road is expected to take a couple of days.
